Current Affairs
Swaziland is one of the last remaining full monarchies. It has failed, horribly, to become a democratic nation and has a king to this day. A major issue facing the country is AIDS. 26% of all adults in Swaziland are infected with HIV and has the most severe level of infection in the world. Swaziland exports 60% of its products to South Africa and 90% of their imports come from South Africa. Agriculture employs 70% of the population.
Background
Swaziland is located east of South Africa and west of Mozambique. In the 19th century, Swaziland was jointly ruled by Britain and the Boer Republic of Transvaal. In 1907, Swaziland became a British High Commission Territory. King Sobhuza came to power and a new constitution was written. Swaziland became independent in 1968 and adopts a new constitution. King Sobhuza suspends the constitution and bans all political parties. King Sobhuza dies. A new king, formerly known as Prince Makhosetive, takes the title of King Mswati III.
